Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has revealed that he has concerns about Mohamed Salah, with transfer interest still lingering in the Saudi Pro League in the Egyptian. The 32-year-old won’t be going anywhere this summer but Thompson is worried about the long-term with Salah’s current contract set to expire in 2025.

“The big worry for me with Mo Salah is Liverpool letting him go on a free next summer as he’s only got a year left of his contract,” Thompson told Paddy Power. “There would be big money on the table if it comes from Saudi Arabia.

“I’m leaning towards wanting Salah to stay and see out his final year. I think the club would have gone down that route before Arne Slot took a seat at the manager’s table as it would have made it a lot easier for him.

“If the new manager came in and the first thing he had to deal with was Mo Salah leaving, then that would have been a big problem, but for nothing to have happened so far, I reckon that he may stay. However, that also causes a problem because you’ve got someone who the club have invested a lot of money into and then he’s going to leave for nothing, so that would be a big worry.”

Alongside Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also need to be tied down to contract extensions sooner rather than later. All three remain key players heading into the Arne Slot era but are currently set to leave as free agents next summer. There is still ample time to negotiate with all three parties, though, and this summer is only just set to begin.

“Every week, Mo Salah breaks records for goals and assists, so if you take that away from our present team, that’s going to be a big loss,” Thompson continued. “Whichever way Liverpool go, it’s going to be a massive call.” says: It makes sense to tie Salah down to a new contract even if that only avoids losing him on a free transfer. If he goes to Saudi Arabia at some point, the Reds should be eyeing up getting a transfer fee for him. The same can be said of Van Dijk, to some degree, though he is a center-back, which is a position where players usually play longer into their 30s.
